For the past 20 years I have been writing my poems,
Just a private collection I kept safe at home.
Then one day I was asked to put pen to paper,
To write a Best Man's speech and do an old friend a favour.
So, with information in hand I set about that rhyme,

Then from there to top table the speech was read out loud,
To family and friends and the large wedding crowd.

Best Man

This Best Man's speech was written with the following information that I was given about the groom:

He was very partial to a drink and he loved his food, especially Indian curries. He always carried a lot of money with him and yet would constantly question the taxi fare at the end of the night!
(I was also given many more facts about the groom which I used in other parts of the speech but below are a few lines, from different sections of the speech, as an example of my work.)

 

Best Man's Speech

Pint after pint soon bite the dust,
And one for the road is always a must.
Last orders are called and Steve strolls to the door,
Then steps over his mates who lie on the floor.

“Good evening Mr Smith” says the waiter politely,
He knows him well enough ’cos he's in there twice nightly.
Side orders, main courses soon disappear,
While he washes them down with a full crate of beer.
Then settles the bill with a big wad of dosh,
While dipping his naan in his last Rogan Josh.

He ends up back home and to the driver’s amazement,
He falls out of the cab and onto the pavement.
Then dusts himself down and throws the cabbie a fiver,
“I know you said ten pounds but you’re a bad driver.”
 

Birthdays

The next was a speech given by a husband to his wife at a surprise party to celebrate her 40th birthday on New Year’s Eve. He wanted me to mention how she had burnt his favourite pink shirt in the kitchen, as well as her love of shopping. Here are just a few of the lines I wrote.

 

Life Begins at Forty

Now with Christmas Day over and the money all spent.
We are all gathered here for the main event.
It's a special occasion and there's not long to go,
As Caroline reaches the big 40  

And as for my pink shirt I once wore with pride,
It's now a pile of ashes I can't recognise.
Caroline left it on the hob while walking around in a daze,
Then tried to rescue the shirt, which by now was ablaze.

So now she has a good excuse to hit the sales in full flow,
So could you kindly drink up as she can't wait to go.
Well it's time to raise your glasses to my wife and best friend,
And tell Caroline that being 40 is never the end. 

  Weddings

 

Father of the Bride

The Father wanted to mention about his daughter Sophie's reluctance to do her homework when she was at school and that she preferred to play her loud music. Also how she did listen to him and finally ended up working in a top job in the city and how he is now so proud of her. Here are few lines taken from that speech.

The music would thump and so would my ears 'Was her homework complete?' were my biggest fears But the volume got lower and those exam marks got higher Now Sophie mixes in circles among the City's high flyers The day she dreamed of is finally here, To walk her down the aisle has made my year. To see her dress, her face, her smile, It just makes this day so worthwhile.

Groom

The groom wanted to say how he had met his soon to be wife while on holiday in Spain and how, after their first meeting, that she managed to throw up over his beach shoes! He said that it had finally won over his Mother-in-law who wasn't sure of him at first. Once again there was a lot more information used throughout the speech, but here are a few lines.

I met Clare in the dark, in a nightclub in Spain, As daylight approached would she still look the same? She was a picture postcard, a scene I will never forget, Of her being sick on my flip flops was her only regret I am such a lucky guy to have met this girl, She has my heart in such a whirl. She's the one for me of that I'm sure, Now just gotta convince the Mother-in-Law.

 

Engagements

This was the actual length of the speech I wrote for my best friend who wanted to propose to his girlfriend but was so nervous and was not very good with words. So he said he wanted it short and to the point and he thought it was perfect. So did his girlfriend because she said Yes!

This can't be right, this can't be me, About to get down on one knee. I'm no romantic as you well know, My feelings for you I find hard to show. But I know you’re the one, you are my life, So will you do me the honour and become my wife?
